Everybody has a story to narrate and a journey to re-count. We all need more sunshine and more freedom in our lives. Have we realized that our minds need the same? We all are running a race against time and sometimes ourselves and often in the bargain, tend to ignore ourselves. It is only lately that we are open to conversations about me time and look at self-improvement as an option. The social media is one such place that has evolved strongly over time and people are comfortable discussing issues about themselves.
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. As a society we still tend to alienate mental health disorders from our system. We however fail to understand that it is the brain that regulates the entire system and if the brain has an issue, it needs treatment. We go to the dentist for a tooth ache, a physician for a fever, a pediatrician for a child, then the same basic rule applies for our minds too.
I, like many others have mental health concerns from time to time. I can cry or snap instantly, but a mental health concern becomes a mental illness without one realizing it. It is when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function, is when you need to delve deeper into it.Our reasons to stress and worry can be unlimited however when it turns into an illness it can make your life go upside down.
There are various symptoms of mental illness, so are noticeable and some go unnoticed. Some of these symptoms are –
- Feeling sad or down
- Concentration Issues
- Mood Swings
- Social withdrawal symptoms
- Fatigue and Tiredness
- Not being able to connect to reality, paranoia or hallucination in some cases
- Changes in eating habits
- Anger Issues
- Suicidal Thinking.
- Body ache in some cases
In some cases some of these symptoms could be due to a hormonal imbalance or some other illness. If you have any of the above signs or any other signs that don’t make you feel like your usual self, it is always better to talk to a medical practitioner.
It is very easy to have suicidal thoughts or to feel that ending your life is the best way to handle a situation. Seldom people feel that if their life ends they would stop feeling a certain way or the problem would end itself. Unfortunately life and situations do not work like that. If you have any of these thoughts, here is what you should do.
- Seek medical help
- Talk to someone about how you feel.
- Meditation helps in certain cases
How can one assist someone who is facing mental health issues? Be there for someone who needs help. One must be completely non-judgmental when offering help to someone. It is never easy to talk about mental illness but one must take the first step towards it. Try and involve yourself into something that will make you feel better gradually over time. In all cases, it is best to ask for medical help and assistance.
I recently saw a very sweet video that encourages talking about mental health. Sharing it here for everyone to see.
