Chocolates helps you shed weight – Yes you can still be lost in candy aisle and day dream about a mouth full of chocolate and still lose weight. I got me a real problem with cacao powder 🍫 1) They tend to be high in heavy metals (mostly Lead and Cadmium but some were found to be high in Mercury, Arsenic, Copper and Aluminum). 2) It’s hard to find a high quality one. . . 🔹Cacao powder theoretically can be very beneficial to health. It is rich in polyphenols which exhibit a protective effect to the body. This is particularly seen in heart and brain health. It’s also is high in magnesium which is a super essential mineral most Americans tend to be low in. Important for everything from sleep to energy production to heart health to nerve health. . . 🔹The problem is that the cacao beans accumulate high levels of lead and cadmium during shipping and processing. These are then concentrated at varying levels during the creation of cacao powder. . . 🔹An independent study on chocolate and cacao powder found that NOW Healthy Foods Organic cacao powder had 15x the California max daily limit per serving. This was followed by Nativas with 5x (although they now claim to be free of heavy metals). Lead has been shown to have potent effects on the neurological system and causes cognitive + developmental issues in children. It also has been shown to effect the heart, kidney and reproductive system. . . 🔹Sunfood was found to have 13x the California max dose of cadmium per serving. Like lead, cadmium builds in the system and exerts negative effects on the respiratory, reproductive and skeletal system as well as strains the kidneys. . . 🔹Remember this: USDA DOES NOT EQUAL FREE OF HEAVY METALS. This is not considered in the labeling for any foods. This is where we must be empowered consumers and investigate. Especially if it’s an everyday exposure. . . 🔺Final recommendation: If you are consuming cacao powder daily… stop. At least until you can get the results of lab testing from the company to show you proof of heavy metals. Be an advocate for your own health. Heavy metals are no joke and this can be a major source of them.
